May 5, 2007: Rockheads & Die Macher

Five players met at Rockheads in Kenosha WI on May 5th, 2007 to determine who would be “Die Macher”  (The Maker, The Handler).  The players were ready and the competition was going to be tough.

“Die Macher is a game about seven sequential political races in different regions of Germany. Players are in charge of national political parties, and must manage limited resources to help their party to victory. The winning party will have the most victory points after all the regional elections.” (from the description on BoardGame Geek)

Jessie and Patty waiting thier turn

We started about 7:30 and finished at about 12:45 so it was a long game but it never seemed like it.  The game does not seem long because the players are always doing something and you are not waiting on the other players to complete a turn before you do yours.  I had played before but the other 4 players had not so almost everybody was new and had to learn the rules.  We only got 2 rules wrong but more on that later.

Steve’s party was the “CDU/CSU”, Tim controlled the “FDP”, Jessie was the SDP, Brian’s party was “Die Grunen” and Patty had “Die Linken”.  Playing pieces were handed out, the board was setup,  rules were quickly explained and we jumped right in with the 1st Election.

Tim’s party matched the opinions of the public in the first region so he concentrated on it and won the 1st election.  The others concentrated their resources on future regions that more closely matched their policies.

Steve figuring out what card to play

Everybody did well in the 2nd region but Steve did the best followed by Jessie and Patty.  Brian did well in the 3rd and 4th regions.  I totally blew off the 3rd region even though there were a lot of seats (points) available because my policies did not match the public opinions.  I concentrated more on the 4th region but things did not work out there either.  I scored some points in the 3rd but was totally blown away in the 4th region.

Tim after being out bid for a Public Opinion Poll

The 5th region saw 3 players tie for the most seats but Patty’s party won by a nose. The 6th region saw Tim and Steve tie for the number of seats but Steve won the election.  We went on to the 7th region and Steve blew out everybody else for the win in that region.

In the end Steve won followed by Patty, who was closely followed by Brian, then Tim and finally Jessie.  It was a fun game and everybody was willing to play again.

I did mess up 2 rules which is better then the 1st couple of times we played where we messed up on several rules.  Both of the rules involved the Public Opinion Poll and it would have made the public opinion more varied. I saw Brian a couple of days after playing and he was ready to play again, using the correct rules.  It will totally change the game and make the public opinion multiplier more important and cut down on the enormous amounts of cash that everybody had at the end of the game.
